Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Want to Know Before Booking Your First Taekwondo Classes in Southlake

The questions we hear most often — answered honestly. Still have something on your mind? Call us at 817-442-8444 and we’ll give you a straight answer.

What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art known for its emphasis on head-height kicks, fast kicking combinations, and jumping and spinning kicks. The name itself breaks down as tae (foot), kwon (fist), and do (way) — meaning the way of the foot and fist. Beyond physical technique, Taekwondo lessons are guided by Five Tenets: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. It is one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the world and has been an Olympic sport since 2000.

Is Taekwondo or Karate better?

Neither is objectively better — they serve different goals. Taekwondo places greater emphasis on dynamic kicking techniques, footwork, and Olympic-style sport sparring, while Karate incorporates a broader mix of hand strikes, kicks, and kata. If fast, powerful kicking and a recognized sport competition pathway interest you, Taekwondo Classes in Southlake are an excellent fit. The best martial art is always the one you will practice consistently and with genuine commitment.

Is Taekwondo or Jiu-Jitsu better?

Taekwondo and Jiu-Jitsu are complementary rather than competing disciplines. Taekwondo focuses on stand-up striking — particularly powerful kicks, distance management, and footwork — while Jiu-Jitsu specializes in ground fighting and submissions. For character development, structured progression, and athletic fitness across all age groups, Taekwondo is a strong choice. For families and adults seeking a complete striking art with Olympic credentials, our Southlake program offers a well-rounded foundation.

What is so special about Taekwondo classes in Southlake?

What sets Taekwondo apart is the combination of physical athleticism and a structured value system. Students do not just learn to kick and block — they train under a clear code of conduct that develops respect, discipline, and resilience over time. The belt progression system provides continuous, measurable goals. The dojang community creates accountability and belonging. For children, teens, and adults alike, Taekwondo classes in Southlake offer something rare: a practice you can train your entire life and keep finding new depth in.

What are the main benefits of practicing Taekwondo?

Students across all age groups attending a Taekwondo class gain improved physical fitness — cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and coordination. Beyond the physical, consistent training builds focus, emotional self-regulation, confidence, and respect. Children often show measurable improvements in classroom behavior and school performance. Adults report significant stress relief and a renewed sense of capability. Practical self-defense awareness is also built into the curriculum at every level.

What skills does Taekwondo focus on?

Taekwondo develops a broad skill set including striking technique (kicks, blocks, and hand strikes), poomsae (patterns or forms that develop precision and memory), kyorugi (sparring that builds timing and strategy), and kyukpa (breaking that demonstrates power and focus). Alongside these technical skills, students develop core life skills: focus, perseverance, leadership, and respect — all of which are reinforced in every class at our Southlake training center.

What is the difference between Olympic Taekwondo and traditional Taekwondo?

Olympic Taekwondo focuses on competitive sparring with an emphasis on speed, precise kicking to the body and head, and strategic footwork — the format seen in the Olympics and international competition. Traditional Taekwondo encompasses a broader curriculum including poomsae (patterns / forms), self-defense applications, breaking, and the philosophical Five Tenets. At our Southlake school, students train both, developing well-rounded technique and a deep understanding of the art as a whole.

Do Taekwondo Classes in Southlake Focus More on Kicks or Punches?

Taekwondo training is predominantly a kicking art. Approximately 70 to 80 percent of the technical emphasis is on kicking — including front kicks, roundhouse kicks, side kicks, spinning kicks, and jump kicks. Hand techniques such as punches and blocks are also taught, but the hallmark of Taekwondo is its dynamic, powerful, and precise kicking system. This makes it an excellent choice for developing lower body strength, flexibility, and explosive athleticism.

How long does it take to progress through Taekwondo belts?

Progression depends on training frequency, consistency, and demonstrated skill at each level. At our Southlake dojang, students training 3 days per week typically earn their first color belt within approximately 5 months. The path to black belt takes roughly 5 years of dedicated training. Every promotion is based on clearly defined technical standards — not on time spent as a member. You will always know exactly what is required to reach the next rank.

What equipment or uniform do you need for Taekwondo?

New students can begin their first class in comfortable athletic clothing — no special equipment is needed to try a class. Once enrolled, students wear a dobok, which is the traditional white Taekwondo uniform. As training progresses into sparring, protective gear is required, including a helmet, chest protector, forearm guards, shin guards, and foot protectors. Our team will guide you through exactly what you need and when — there is no pressure to purchase anything before you decide to join.
